October 2025 TAE Updates
Under the 2025 Standards for RTOs, acceptable trainer and assessor qualifications are now defined within the Credential Policy which replaces the ‘Schedule 1’ terminology from the 2015 Standards.
There is now no mandatory requirement for current trainers and assessors to upgrade to TAE40122. Multiple credential pathways remain recognised, including:
- TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
- Relevant higher education teaching qualifications
- Endorsed skill sets (such as TAESS00029 Volunteer Trainer Delivery Skill Set and TAESS00030 Volunteer Trainer Delivery and Assessment Contribution Skill Set)
These credentials remain valid provided they align with the trainer’s delivery and assessment responsibilities. This update reflects the increased flexibility of the 2025 Standards, allowing RTOs to employ qualified industry experts while maintaining compliance and quality outcomes.
January 2023 TAE Updates
The TAE Training Package Version 5 was officially approved by the Australian Industry Skills Committee on November 8, 2022, and received endorsement from Skills Ministers on November 18, 2022. This TAE update includes the introduction of a new qualification, TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which supersedes and is equivalent to the previous TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
The qualifications required for trainers and assessors outlined in Schedule 1 of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations remain the same. Currently, there is no mandatory requirement for current trainers and assessors to obtain the new TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Extended Transition Period for TAE Training Package Updates
In line with the Guidance for Providers – Learner Transitions, ASQA will only approve requests for an extended transition period when it can be shown that a group of learners would face a significant disadvantage without the extension.
ASQA has granted an extended transition period for all RTOs registered with ASQA for the following TAE qualifications:
- TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
- TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training
- TAE50216 Diploma of Training Design and Development
The TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training and the TAE50216 Diploma of Training Design and Development are superseded and are not considered equivalent to the TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training.
The extended period for training, assessment, and issuance of certification for these qualifications will end on December 9, 2024.
