Empowering the Mining and Automotive Industries: Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance launch

15 June 2023 Update

Dr. Gavin Lind, Chief Executive Officer of the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance, announced that Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) is spearheading a ground-breaking initiative in collaboration with the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance. Their joint efforts have resulted in the development of two cutting-edge data platforms that promise to revolutionise the labour market and skills landscape in Australia. These platforms, namely the JSA Atlas and Data Profile & Placemats, hold immense potential for the mining and automotive sectors, providing valuable insights to stakeholders at various levels.

The JSA Atlas: Unveiling a Comprehensive View of the Labour Market

The JSA Atlas is an ambitious and experimental data platform that integrates datasets from the JSA and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This ground-breaking platform offers stakeholders a panoramic and detailed overview of the labour market and skills data at a national, state, and regional level. For the first time ever, this unique fusion of economic and skills data has been made accessible through a single, user-friendly interface. With its powerful search capabilities, the Atlas promises to be a game-changer for stakeholders seeking a comprehensive understanding of workforce dynamics.

Data Profile & Placemats: Unlocking Key Workforce Insights

The Data Profile & Placemats feature is a concise yet highly informative resource providing a 1 to 2-page snapshot of JSA’s remit. It presents current data on major employers, commonwealth agencies, workforce statistics, data challenges, VET (Vocational Education and Training) data, occupations, unions, awards, and employer associations. The data and insights shared through this resource will prove invaluable in informing workforce planning, education, and training needs across various industries.

16 May 2023 Update

In a significant development for the mining and automotive sectors, the newly established Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance (MASA) was officially launched last week. The organisation, with its headquarters based in Melbourne and additional offices in Perth and Brisbane, aims to address the skills and training needs of these industries.

Board Members at the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance launch

Under the leadership of Chair Nicky Firth, MASA’s board members and executive team, as revealed by CEO Dr Gavin Lind, are set to drive the organisation’s mission forward. MASA traces its origins back to 2020, when it commenced as the Mining Skills Organisation Pilot and later evolved into the Australian Minerals and Energy Skills Alliance (AUSMESA).

The Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance’s Role

The primary focus of the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance lies in coordinating training packages pertinent to the mining and automotive sectors. This includes:

  • RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry training package, which caters to the mining industry
  • AUR Automotive Retail, Service and Repair training package encompassing both service and repair qualifications along with retail-specific qualifications
  • AUM Automotive Manufacturing training package

By serving as an independent voice to the government, MASA advocates for the mining and automotive industries, representing those involved in mineral exploration, extraction operations, and emerging sectors such as driverless automotive technologies.

Future Plans for the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance

Acknowledging the historical significance of the mining and resources industry as the backbone of the nation’s prosperity, the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance recognises its continued vital role in the years to come. As global efforts to decarbonise gain momentum, the demand for critical minerals is expected to surge, further underscoring the importance of the mining sector.

Similarly, the automotive industry will play a crucial part, with reducing automotive emissions emerging as a top priority for Australia in its pursuit of net-zero goals. In light of these challenges, the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance places considerable emphasis on training reforms and alleviating workforce shortages in both industries, aligning its vision, mission, and goals accordingly.

Driven by a proactive approach, the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance has been actively engaging with industry leaders and educators across the country, fostering strong relationships and building on past achievements. Looking ahead, the organisation eagerly anticipates participating in various conferences and events nationwide, providing opportunities for meaningful engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders.

As MASA prepares for future endeavours, it remains committed to effectively communicating opportunities for stakeholder engagement and consultation. Valuable feedback from stakeholders is highly encouraged and appreciated, ensuring a collaborative and inclusive approach to shaping the future of the mining and automotive sectors.
